IELTS Speaking Part 1 Questions and Answers: 12 Common Topics with Sample Answers

IELTS Speaking Part 1 Questions and Answers: 12 Common Topics with Sample Answers

Part 1 is the first four to five minutes of the IELTS Speaking test. The examiner asks short questions about you: your home, your studies or work, and everyday topics. It sounds easy, which is exactly why many candidates under-prepare and give one-word answers that keep their band low.

This guide shows you a simple formula for Part 1 answers and gives natural sample answers for twelve topics that come up again and again.

The Part 1 answer formula

A good Part 1 answer is usually two to three sentences — longer than “Yes, I do”, but much shorter than a Part 2 speech. Use this pattern:

  • Answer the question directly.
  • Add a reason or detail (“because…”, “especially…”).
  • Add an example or a contrast (“For instance…”, “although…”).

Weak: “Yes, I like reading.”
Better: “Yes, quite a lot, especially novels. I usually read for half an hour before bed because it helps me switch off, although during exams I hardly have time.”

12 common Part 1 topics with sample answers

1. Hometown

Where is your hometown?
“I am from Lahore, which is in the east of Pakistan, quite close to the Indian border. It is the second-biggest city in the country and it is famous for its food and its Mughal architecture.”

What do you like most about it?
“Definitely the food. You can find amazing street food almost anywhere, and people take it very seriously — there are arguments about which shop makes the best nihari.”

2. Work or studies

Do you work or are you a student?
“I am a final-year student. I am studying computer science, and I am hoping to do a master’s abroad next year, which is why I am taking IELTS.”

Why did you choose that subject?
“Mainly because I enjoy solving problems. I started building small websites in school, and I liked the feeling of making something that actually worked.”

3. Home and accommodation

Do you live in a house or a flat?
“I live in a house with my parents and two younger sisters. It is not huge, but it has a small garden, which is rare in our area.”

Which room do you spend the most time in?
“Probably my bedroom, because that is where I study. I have set up a desk by the window, so there is plenty of natural light.”

4. Hobbies and free time

What do you do in your free time?
“I play cricket with friends at the weekend, and in the evenings I watch documentaries. I find them relaxing but still interesting.”

5. Food

What is your favourite food?
“I would have to say biryani. My grandmother makes it for family gatherings, so for me it is connected with good memories as well as good taste.”

Do you prefer eating at home or eating out?
“At home, mostly. Eating out is fun occasionally, but home food is healthier and, honestly, usually tastier.”

6. Weather

What kind of weather do you like?
“I prefer cool, cloudy weather. Summers where I live can reach over forty degrees, so a grey, breezy day feels like a gift.”

7. Mobile phones

How often do you use your phone?
“Far too often, if I am honest. I use it for studying, messaging and maps, but I have started turning off notifications in the evening to be more productive.”

8. Reading

Do you like reading?
“Yes, I do, although I read more online articles than books these days. When I have time, I enjoy biographies because I like learning how people overcame difficulties.”

9. Music

What kind of music do you listen to?
“Quite a mix. I listen to Sufi music when I want to relax and pop music when I am exercising, because it keeps my energy up.”

10. Friends

Do you prefer having a few close friends or many friends?
“A few close friends. I think it is better to have two or three people you can really rely on than lots of people you hardly know.”

11. Travel

Do you like travelling?
“I love it, although I have not travelled abroad yet. Within my country, my favourite trips have been to the northern areas because of the mountains.”

12. Shopping

Do you prefer shopping online or in shops?
“Online for things like books and electronics, because it is cheaper and quicker. But for clothes I prefer shops, since I like to try things on first.”

Tips to score higher in Part 1

  • Extend, but do not lecture. Two or three sentences is ideal. The examiner has a list of questions to get through.
  • Be natural. Phrases like “to be honest”, “I would say”, “it depends” make you sound fluent — but do not overuse one phrase.
  • It is fine to be ordinary. You do not need impressive opinions. You need clear, accurate English.
  • Do not memorise. Learn useful phrases, then practise answering new questions out loud every day.
  • Listen to the tense. “Did you…” needs past tense, “Do you…” needs present. Mixing them is one of the most common Part 1 errors.

Frequently asked questions

How long is IELTS Speaking Part 1?

Four to five minutes. The examiner usually asks about two or three topics, starting with your home, work or studies.

Is it bad to give short answers in Part 1?

One-word answers limit your fluency and vocabulary score. Aim for two or three sentences, but do not turn every answer into a speech.

What if I do not know what to say?

Use a short phrase to give yourself time (“That is an interesting question, I have never really thought about it…”) and then give a simple, honest answer.
