Planning to study, work or settle in Australia? Two English tests come up again and again: PTE Academic, a popular choice for students and visa applicants, and OET, the Occupational English Test designed in Australia for healthcare professionals.
Both tests reward the same core skills: clear speaking, accurate writing and strong listening. This guide explains what each test is for and how to use AI to prepare for them.
PTE Academic: fast, computer-scored English testing
PTE Academic, run by Pearson, is taken entirely on a computer and scored automatically on a scale from 10 to 90. It tests speaking, writing, reading and listening, often in integrated tasks that combine skills, such as listening to a lecture and then summarising it. Results usually arrive within a few days, which is one reason it is popular with visa applicants.
Why AI practice suits PTE
Because PTE is scored by computer, your speaking is recorded and assessed automatically. That makes practising with AI speech recognition especially relevant:
- Clear pronunciation matters. If AI speech recognition struggles to understand you in a quiet room, that is a sign to work on clarity, word endings and stress.
- Fluency matters. Long pauses, restarts and hesitation can lower your speaking score. Practise speaking smoothly without stopping to correct yourself.
- Timing matters. PTE tasks are short and timed. Practise starting quickly and finishing within the time limit.
PTE preparation tips
- Learn every task type in the current official format from Pearson, so nothing surprises you.
- Practise speaking every day with AI and use the feedback to find hesitations and unclear words.
- Practise summarising: read or listen to short academic texts and write one clear sentence about the main idea.
- Work on spelling and grammar, as written answers are checked for accuracy.
OET: English for healthcare professionals
OET was developed in Australia and is accepted by many healthcare regulators in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Ireland and other countries. It is designed for professions such as nursing, medicine, pharmacy, dentistry and physiotherapy.
OET has four sub-tests. Listening and Reading use general healthcare material and are the same for all professions. Writing and Speaking are specific to your profession: you typically write a letter, such as a referral, and take part in role-plays where you speak with a patient or their carer. Results are reported as grades from A to E, and many regulators ask for at least a grade B.
How to prepare for OET with AI
- Practise role-plays. Ask an AI tutor to play a patient with a specific concern, then practise explaining, reassuring and checking understanding in clear, simple English.
- Focus on patient-friendly language. OET Speaking rewards clear explanations, not medical jargon. Practise turning technical terms into words a patient understands.
- Get feedback on your letters. Write practice letters under time pressure, then use AI feedback to check organisation, tone, conciseness and accuracy.
- Listen to healthcare English. Health podcasts, consultations and lectures build the vocabulary and listening stamina you need.
PTE, OET or IELTS?
Many Australian visa routes and institutions accept more than one test. If you are a healthcare professional, OET lets you use the English of your job. If you want fast, computer-scored results, PTE may suit you. If you prefer a face-to-face speaking test, consider IELTS. Always confirm which tests and scores your visa route, university or regulator accepts before you book. Our comparison IELTS vs TOEFL vs PTE vs OET covers the differences in more detail.
